Minutes of the general meeting
Monday, April 14th, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 7:30pm, Commodore Barker presiding.
The pledge of allegiance was recited. The roll was taken with all board members present.
Old business
Treasures report: Guarino’s report regarding profit and loss was the same as the report given to the board on April 7th, 2008.
Membership report: Inglima reminded those members who want a slip to check the postings in the pilothouse and see the dock master. He also reminded members that there is a list of meeting attendance posted in the clubhouse. If you do not sign in at a meeting your attendance will not be counted
Planning report: Decker introduced Jeff Wheeler who spoke about the poker run event scheduled for May 17th, 2008. There is a sign up sheet in the clubhouse so we can determine an approximate number of participants to plan for food. Decker then thanked Wheeler for his contribution in installing our satellite HD TV’s. Wheelers company does custom satellite installations
Social’s report: Kresge reported that the acme crew worked in the clubhouse on the second Saturday of the month and accomplished a lot. Kenny Casteel and Al fixed the cooler behind the bar that was leaking. Kresge announced that he will be planning a 60th birthday party for the lsbc. This year that will be in September. May 3rd, 2008 we will have a party honoring all members that have been in the club for at least 20 years. This will be a covered dish event with entertainment. The bar will be open at 6:00pm. On mother’s day, May 11th, 2008 and breakfast will be served from 8am-12. And the cost will be 5 or 6 dollars
Vice commodore’s report: O’Riordan thanked George Paturzo for donating the 18 ft. Angler boat. This was auctioned off and won by Dick Masten who bid $630. This brings the money raised for the charity to approximately $2,500. The kid’s canepole tournament is scheduled for April 26th, 2008. From 9:00am- 11:30am. The kids can sign up in the clubhouse. O’Riordan asked for volunteers to help set up the tackle on Wednesday night April 23rd, 2008. O’Riordan thanked Jody Ray, Dino Freeman, Carl Nelson, and Jim Barker for each donating a fishing pole for first, second and third place prizes for the tournament. He further thanked those involved in working on the stage project, including his neighbor for donating the carpet.
Commodore’s report: Barker spoke on the bylaw change announced at the board meeting relating to the increased number of new members that can be nominated annually by a member in goods standing. This will be voted on at the May general meeting. Barker than discussed the motion that was tabled from the last general meeting concerning the purchase defibrillators for the boat club. Barker then asked John Semper who is employed with the Broward county sheriff’s office fire rescue to talk on the issue. John highly recommended the purchase of the units and endorsed its effectiveness. The unit is completely automatic and john would provide training to all interested club members, as well as CPR. Fred Romanowicz questioned the effectiveness of the unit. John responded that they have documented cases where the units are effective and they are currently being placed in numerous public places. Several members then spoke in support of purchasing the units. Jim hall spoke in opposition of the purchase because he questioned the effectiveness of the units and the lack of budgeting for them. Several members voiced their concern regarding the security of the units and there placement. Dick Masten the former chief of police in Miami Shores talked about his personal experience in how the life of one of his officers was saved by the use of a defibrillator. Mark Siedle then made a motion to purchase two defibrillators with an expenditure of $1,500 each. The motion was carried overwhelmingly. Dell than reported that we have about 95% compliance from those members who have been notified that their registrations were out of date
New business
Secretary’s report: I discussed the great progress we were making with the plans for the dads dolphin days fishing tournaments. We held a meeting on April 10th, and our next meeting will be May 1st. The fund raising is progressing and the design of the tournament shirts is in process. Saturday, June 7th is the lady’s tournament, Saturday June 14th is the men’s tournament, and the captains meetings for the events will be held on the Friday night before the respective tournaments at 7:00pm. The juniors division will include a first, second, and third place division for the heaviest dolphin. The ladies entry fee is $30. Per lady angler and they must complete an entry form for each angler, after June 2nd, the entry fee will be $40 per lady angler. The men’s tournament is $75. Per boat and you will need to complete only one entry form per boat. Dan Boehmer was than introduced to update the membership on our fund raising committee’s progress. Dan has agreed to head the committee as in the previous year and has been very instrumental in the tournaments success last year. Dan introduced the other members of the committee, Patrick Devine, Paul Hardin, and Jim Molter. Paul has been working on the tournament pamphlet that will be mailed out in our news letter, as well as to the South Florida marine trades association. (In which LSBC is a member). Paul and Jim asked for help in contacting members of the marine trades industry association, in order to promote our tournament and solicit support through the purchase of a tournament banner, or a donation of a gift for the event. Patrick discussed his role in contacting people he knows in the industry for their support. I thanked Ben DeCook for his tremendous support in the design and printing of the pamphlets and entry forms. He is also working on the design of the shirt along with Kelly
Docks and grounds report: Nelson asked for help on acme scheduled for April 19th. Nelson then thanked CE. (Stretch) Brittain, for his generous contribution of pavers for our patio
Membership report: Inglima had the membership sponsors introduce their candidates for membership: Dale Siegel, Rick Oriol, Jerry Maguire, Art Kelly, and John Lipka. Jeremy Duboff was reintroduced and voted into the club. I then administered the oath of membership
Commodore’s report: Barker discussed the thefts that have occurred recently and that he appointed a board to review the problem and make recommendations to the membership. The commodore than gave the floor to Fred Romanowicz, who asked whether any action was taken against members who had not attended sufficient meetings last year. Inglima responded that there are 7-8 people that have not attended sufficient meetings; however, they have the balance of this year to comply. Dan Singleton offered his assistance to the club with the installation of cameras to better improve the security in the club that can be accessed by the internet for under $500. This months fishing tournament went to Jeff Brown, 3rd place with a 23 lb. King fish, Franz Armstrong, 2nd place with a 29 lb. Dolphin, and Jim Molter, 1st place with a 39 lb. Wahoo. The 50/50 raffle was won by Tony Arencibia for $135.00 who donated it to the LSBC charity.
